Question For the Roman Catholic

If authority of the Roman Catholic church is so important, then why did the Bereans in Acts 17:11 not just subject themselves to that apostolic authority instead of checking what Paul said against Scripture – and Paul praised them for it?

Acts 17:11 (NASB) Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Does the Bible Support the Concept of Purgatory?

The Roman Catholic follower will at times supply two primary passages to support their idea of Purgatory.

Matthew 12:32:

Matthew 12:32 (NIV) reads:  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Of course The Lord was speaking of the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

How does the Roman Catholic interpret that as “Purgatory? Well the RC believes that it is very possible to have sins forgiven in the age to come!

Calvin wrote in response to this Roman Catholic interpretation in his writing “Insitutes of the Christian Religion 1960”:

“When the Lord, they say, makes known the “sin against the Holy Spirit is not forgiven either in this age or the age to come”, he hints at the same time that there is forgiveness of certain sins in the world to come. But who cannot see that the Lord is there speaking of the guilt of sin? But if this is so, what has it got to do with their purgatory. Since, in their opinion, punishment of sins is undergone in purgatory, why do they deny their guilt is remitted in the present life?”

Next passage: 1 Corrinthians 3: 10-15 (NASB):

10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. 14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

This is the most popular scripture for the Roman Catholic to buttress his idea of purgatory. But where do we find purgatory in this passage? If the words about “fire” are to be used as support of their idea of purgatory, where has the RCC defines that there is indeed, fire in purgatory? In fact, this scripture fails to state that the person goes into the fire or atonement for sins is then suffered!

There is no reference to the idea of purgatory being a place or thing in the Bible. Often the RC will respond to the word “purgatory” not mentioned in the Bible by stating that the word “Trinity” is not in the Bible either. Such a statement is fruitless as even the RC does not deny the Trinity.

Please pray for the Roman Catholic to leave their heresies behind, as their Salvation is a very precious thing!

Do We Need “Good Works” and “Faith” to be Saved? Book of James Explained

The Roman Catholic Church is quite clear in their stance that Roman Catholics must have “Good Works” as well as Faith to be saved. It is in their Catechism:

The specific precepts of the natural law, because their observance, demanded by the Creator, is necessary for salvation,” (CCC, par. 2010).

“The Decalogue [the Ten Commandments] contains a privileged expression of the natural law. It is made known to us by divine revelation and by human reason,” (CCC 2080).

” . . . the Second Vatican Council confirms: ‘The bishops, successors of the apostles, receive from the Lord . . . the mission of teaching all peoples, and of preaching the Gospel to every creature, so that all men may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the Commandments,'” (CCC 2068).

However this is not a biblically based doctrine. It is a dangerous doctrine that if the Roman Catholic believes, will be on their way to hell. The RC will cite the book of James as proof that works are required for Salvation! However this is not true.

James begins this section by using the example of someone who says he has faith but has no works, “What use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him?” (James 2:14). In other words, James is addressing the issue of a dead faith; that is nothing more than a verbal pronouncement. It is empty of life and action. He begins with the negative and demonstrates what an empty faith is (verses 15-17, words without actions). Then he shows that that type of faith isn’t much different from the faith of demons (verse 19). Finally, he gives examples of living faith that is words followed by actions. He writes of Abraham and Rahab as examples of people who demonstrated their faith by their deeds. In brief, James is examining two kinds of faith: one that leads to godly works and one that does not. One is true, and the other is false. One is dead, the other alive; hence, “Faith without works is dead,” (James 2:20).

Please pray for the Roman Catholic follower to repent and leave that apostate religion.

The Marion Dogmas

The Truth is only found in scripture, and if you can’t locate a dogma in the Holy Scriptures then it I not Truth! The Roman Catholic Church is apostate and has what is named the “Marion Dogma’s” and they have no Biblical Basis! Remember the daunting scripture in 1 Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 4:6
6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become [e]arrogant in behalf of one against the other.

You are not to exceed what is written!
I will quote the Roman Catholic Church’s own documents.

1. Mary is the Mother of God.

“Mary is truly “Mother of God” since she is the mother of the eternal Son of God made man, who is God himself,” (CCC 509).

“Called in the Gospels “the mother of Jesus,” Mary is acclaimed by Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and even before the birth of her son, as “the mother of my Lord.” In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Father’s eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly “Mother of God” (Theotokos),” (CCC 495).

2. Mary was a virgin for her entire life; Perpetual Virginity.

“Mary “remained a virgin in conceiving her Son, a virgin in giving birth to him, a virgin in carrying him, a virgin in nursing him at her breast, always a virgin” (St. Augustine, Sermon. 186, 1: PL 38, 999): with her whole being she is “the handmaid of the Lord” (Lk 1:38),” (CCC 510).

“The deepening of faith in the virginal motherhood led the Church to confess Mary’s real and perpetual virginity even in the act of giving birth to the Son of God made man. In fact, Christ’s birth “did not diminish his mother’s virginal integrity but sanctified it.” And so the liturgy of the Church celebrates Mary as Aeiparthenos, the “Ever-virgin,” (CCC 499).

3. The Immaculate Conception. That Mary remained without sin or stain and was redeemed at conception.

“Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.” The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians: In giving birth you kept your virginity; in your Dormition, you did not leave the world, O Mother of God, but were joined to the source of Life. You conceived the living God and, by your prayers, will deliver our souls from death,” (CCC 966).

“Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854: The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin,” (CCC 491).

4. The Bodily Assumption of Mary.

“The Sunday celebration of the Lord’s Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life. “Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.” (1167; 2043) “Also to be observed are the day of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension of Christ, the feast of the Body and Blood of Christi, the feast of Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, the feast of Saint Joseph, the feast of the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul, and the feast of All Saints,” (CCC 2177).

“Catholic” Does Not Mean “Roman Catholic”

Be certain when defending God’s Word that you keep in mind that there is an air of confusion with the term “Catholic.” By definition “Catholic” refers to and means “universal” and theologically means “the entire Christian Church.” As the Roman Catholic Church does not follow proper Christian doctrine it cannot mean the same and cannot even be called Christian for that matter.
